Before you compare

Read this first. NHTSA says these summary incident reports are not normalized: companies do not report how many vehicles they run or how many miles they drive, so the counts are not adjusted for fleet size, miles traveled or where each company operates. A company with more reports may simply run more vehicles for more miles, or have better crash telemetry. NHTSA cautions against comparing crash counts between companies. Reports can be incomplete or unverified, one crash can produce more than one report, and injury severity is as alleged in the report.

ADS crash reports by company

Each row counts the latest version of each report a company filed with NHTSA for crashes with its automated driving system engaged, for incidents from Apr 2025 through Sep 2026. Counts are reports, not miles-adjusted rates. NHTSA links 1,550 distinct incidents across these 1,551 reports.

How we count

We download NHTSA's ADS incident report CSV for the third amended General Order (reports from June 16, 2025 onward) each month. When a company files several versions of one report, we keep only the latest, the same rule NHTSA uses for its charts. We do not merge reports from different companies about the same crash, so a few crashes may be counted twice. "No one in the driver seat" means the report lists no in-vehicle operator (none, or remote only). Injury columns use the highest severity alleged in the report. Crashes reported before June 16, 2025 sit in NHTSA's archive and are not included. See the methodology and the NHTSA source page.
